Sorana Cirstea is seeded tenth in this week’s AEGON Classic, and she’ll be hoping to go deep in a draw that contains several big names. The world No. 43 has achieved some decent results this season, and will be looking to make an encouraging start to the grass-court swing.
First up for the Romanian is a tournament opener against world No. 269 Melanie Oudin. This may sound like an easy contest for the 22 year-old, but she’ll know better than that. Oudin once ranked just outside the top thirty, and is a former WTA Newcomer of the year. The American has slid down the rankings dramatically in recent years, but is far better than recent results suggest.
Oudin thrashed Cirstea 6-3, 6-0 when the two players met in Paris in 2010, and this may give her the edge. Recent form makes Cirstea the favourite, but Oudin could be in with a chance here. A victory for the American could help her get back to where she belongs in the women’s game, and she’ll surely be eager to make the most of this opportunity to play main draw WTA tennis.
