Sloane Stephens continued her quest for glory at the Citi Open this week with a 6-4, 6-4 success against young Canadian Eugenie Bouchard. The American is the third seed here and has been tipped to be one of the main title contenders from the start of the week. Her next match will be a semi-final clash against Slovakia’s Magdalena Rybarikova.
Rybarikova is ranked just outside of the top hundred but appears to be a serious threat. Her respectable but unspectacular 15-15 mark for 2012 prior to this event did little to indicate that she’d be playing so well in Washington. Having beaten Jana Cepelova 6-2, 6-4 in the quarter-finals, Rybarikova is yet to drop a set all week.
Ahead of this contest Stephens will be considered the favourite, though Rybarikova’s form this week is hard to ignore. Second seed Chanelle Scheepers was amongst the players to fall against the Slovakian, so it would be unfair to suggest that she’s had an easy draw. It looks like we can anticipate an exciting matchup tonight.
