Shuai Peng could be a title contender in this week’s Texas Tennis Open. She’ll be seeking a safe start to her campaign today when she meets Ayumi Morita for a potentially tricky first round match. The world No. 36 hasn’t exactly been in red-hot form this season, and a few wins here would be very helpful to her bid close in on the top twenty again.
Morita hasn’t done much in recent months to suggest that she’ll go a long way in Dallas. She’s currently the world No. 94 having put together a 13-17 mark for the 2012 season. The 22-year-old is capable of improving on this, and has shown a small amount of improvement this season.
Peng and Morita should be very familiar with each other having met competitively on six occasions. Morita won one of these meetings, back in 2009, but Peng prevailed in the rest. She’s currently on a four-match winning streak against Morita.
Maybe we’ll see a big effort from Morita this evening. Even so, there’s no denying that Peng is the likely victor. A straight sets win for the sixth seed seems a probable outcome.
