Maria Sharapova was a runner-up in 2010 and a winner in 2011, and she’ll be returning to Mason, Ohio in August to defend her Western and Southern Open title. The Russian is up against some world class opponents, but will be eager to get her hands on the Rookwood Cup once again. She beat Jelena Jankovic 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-3 in last season’s final.
Sharapova has plenty of reasons to be optimistic this time around. This has been a big year for her, in which she’s returned to No. 1 in the rankings and completed a sensational Career Grand Slam by winning the French Open.
Sharapova can’t anticipate a straightforward route to the title though, as the field this year includes Serena Williams, Sam Stosur, Petra Kvitova, Agnieszka Radwanska, Caroline Wozniacki, Marion Bartoli, Na Li and Angelique Kerber. It looks like we’re in for an exceptional tournament in Cincinnati in a few weeks.
