Serena Williams hasn’t been particularly troubled at the Bank of the West Classic this week, and she continued her steady progress towards the final on Friday by beating Chanelle Scheepers 6-4, 6-0 in the last eight. The American currently looks on course for a successful title defence.
“I knew I was going to start slow, but I expected to stay consistent and hang in there,” said Williams, who reported that she still feels jet-lagged. “Finally, I started moving better.”
Williams’ semi-final opponent will be Sorana Cirstea of Romania. Cirstea dropped her opening set against third seed Dominika Cibulkova on Friday, but fought back for a superb 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-0 triumph.
“I did not feel comfortable at the start,” admitted Cirstea after beating Cibulkova. “Then I got used to her pace and I served pretty well. I was playing better match to match.”
Speaking ahead of the semi-finals, Serena remarked, “I think it's going to be a good match. She has a good serve, which is why I love her game.”
