Sara Errani has won her last 12 matches on clay, and has already wrapped up titles in Acapulco and Barcelona. She entered this year’s Budapest Grand Prix as the top seed, and so far she’s met expectations. Despite meeting a determined resistance from Melinda Czink on Wednesday, the Italian pulled through with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 victory.
“She started to play better in the second set and I got nervous,” admitted Errani after her win. “I had two games from 40-15 that I lost. In the third set, I tried to be calmer, to hit the ball deeper and push her outside the court, and that worked better.”
Alberta Brianti was also involved in a second round battle, in which she required three hours to defeat Lesia Tsurenko 5-7,7-5, 6-4. Although Brianti has dropped outside of the top hundred, it’s evident that she still packs a punch.
Errani has been in outstanding form of late, and she’ll surely be the favourite here. Still, Brianti is an experienced competitor, and she might have an outside chance of putting an end to Errani’s clay court streak.
