Sam Stosur will be glad to return to hard courts following the grass swing, as she’s never quite managed to find her game on turf. She enters this year’s Rogers Cup in Montreal as the fourth seed, and a lengthy run is probable for the Aussie. Stosur will be the defending champion on her return to Flushing Meadows this year, and she’ll be keen to find the kind of form that could help her retain the slam title.
Stosur received a bye in the first round, so she’ll make a start to her title charge with a second round clash against Romania’s Simona Halep. Halep made a solid start to the tournament by beating Portuguese qualifier Michelle Larcher De Brito 6-4, 6-3 earlier in the week. Halep is a capable opponent who might be able to make things difficult for Stosur.
These two players have only ever met competitively on clay at the French Open. Following two one-sided encounters the Aussie holds a 2-0 head to head record against the world No. 48. Stosur is just as good, if not better on hard courts, so it looks like she’s going to make it three in a row tonight.
