We assess Samantha Stosur’s chances of winning the BNP Paribas Open

Samantha Stosur is one of the top seeds in this week’s BNP Paribas Open, and she might just prove to be a dark horse in the race for the title. The Aussie is the reigning US Open champion, but her performances at the beginning of the 2012 season haven’t been particularly exceptional. She’s played some good tennis though, and managed a runner-up finish in Doha, but she’ll be disappointed with her displays in Australia in January.
With Victoria Azarenka, Petra Kvitova and Maria Sharapova all playing superbly at the moment, there has been little talk of Stosur winning the Indian Wells Open. That said, Stosur has the ability to beat anyone on outdoor hard courts, provided that she’s on form. Her powerful game can be explosive, and it could make sense to back her to win this competition at the lengthy odds of 20/1 being offered by Sportingbet.
If you go for a slightly less ambitious bet, you can wager on Stosur reaching the final at 6/1 with bet365. Stosur may have to battle past the likes of Caroline Wozniacki, Sharapova and Sabine Lisicki in her half of the draw, but she might just upset the odds. However, she’s likely to struggle even more against either Kvitova or Azarenka, who are both potential opponents in the final.
