Italy's Roberta Vinci faces the dangerous Yanina Wickmayer in the opening round of WTA Montreal today.
Former world number one Ana Ivanovic awaits the winner and it's probably safe to say that the Serb would much rather play Vinci. Wickmayer is very dangerous on the North American hard courts and she reached the semis of the US Open a few years ago.
The good news for Ivanovic is that Vinci leads 3-2 on the head-to-head. The experienced Italian has won her last three matches against Wickmayer, all in straight sets. She beat her 6-1, 6-2 on the blue clay of Madrid back in May and most interestingly, the score was 6-1, 6-2 when they met in Toronto last year.
As a result we feel the bookies may have definitely missed a trick or too here. They have Wickmayer as the favourite so we suggest backing Vinci heavily at 17/12 with Pinnacle Sports
It's been a good season for Vinci who's been showing that she's not just a clay-court specialist, impressively reaching the fourth round of Wimbledon last month and the fourth round in Indian Wells earlier this year.
Wickmayer definitely has the more potential on hard courts but the 6 foot tall Belgian has often struggled against the guile and speed of the diminutive Vinci (she stands at just 5 foot 4) in the past. She made the semis in Stanford last month but given that she tends to struggle against the cagey counter-punchers, we're backing Vinci to take this.
