Petra Kvitova received a bye in the first round of the Sony Ericsson Open this year, but she’d perhaps have preferred to have gotten some competitive court time under her belt before her eagerly awaited second round showdown against Venus Williams on Friday. The Czech has admitted to struggling with the conditions here, and it seems like her asthma condition may hold her back.
“I feel fine, but when I run a lot I feel the asthma and it's tough to breath,” admitted Kvitova in a recent interview. “But I can play even when it feels bad. I use my inhaler on court. Early in a match I feel fine, but I can't really move as well and play aggressive as I like.”
Williams may have just returned from injury, but as always it looks like she’ll be a serious threat. She made her comeback this week with a straightforward 6-0, 6-3 dismissal of Kimiko Date-Krumm, and it seems as though she might just be in with a chance on Friday.
“It was great to be back out there,” commented Venus after her win. “Just being in this tournament is a huge win for me. That’s what I told myself. This is a win. I have nothing to lose.”
“My game is a lot better for sure,” she continued. “I don’t go out with expectations of how I’m going to feel that day. I just give my best on that day. That’s how it is. I just do my best and give everything. So that’s what it’s about for me.”
Kvitova will take a 1-0 head to head record against Williams into this matchup, having beaten her 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 in Memphis in 2008.
