Petra Kvitova is the fifth seed in this year’s Rogers Cup and she looks like one of the main contenders for the title. She may be feeling a little disappointed about recent tournaments, though she’s not played badly at all. The Czech achieved quarter-final appearances in both Wimbledon 2012 and the Olympic tennis event, also played at the All-England Club.
Kvitova’s first opponent in Montreal will be Kazakhstan’s Ksenia Pervak. Whilst Kvitova received a bye in round one, Pervak had to battle through two tough sets to scrape a 7-6(6), 7-6(4) success against Georgian qualifier Anna Tatishvili.
Kvitova last met Pervak in Brisbane last season. Following a dominant first set from Pervak, Kvitova managed to regroup for a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory. Kvitova should be able to clinch another win against the world No. 72 today, and she’ll know better than to underestimate the 21-year-old when she steps out on the Central Court.
