Angelique Kerber has stepped up her game immensely in the past year and become one of the best players in women’s tennis. Having already achieved a few career milestones this season, she can now add another to her list - a win against Serena Williams.
The young German had been expected to struggle, but instead clinched a 6-4, 6-4 victory over the American, who had won 36 of her last 37 matches. Ultimately, it was Kerber’s precision under pressure that won the contest. She converted the two break points that she earned on Serena’s serve, and saved all four break points on her own serve.
“Today was one of the biggest wins of my career, and it's also amazing to be in the semis here,” said Kerber. “I wasn't thinking about my opponent on the other side. My goal was just to give my best and hit the ball, move very well and get the balls back from her because they are so fast. I really had nothing to lose. I just tried to do my game plan and it worked.”
Kerber will now face former Wimbledon champ Petra Kvitova, who defied an in-form Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in straight sets (6-3, 7-6(4)) to set up the clash. Kvitova won last week’s Rogers Cup and appears to have hit a rich vein of form.
Following two clay court matches this season, Kerber and Kvitova have a 1-1 head to head record. It’s not easy to pick a winner for this upcoming clash, which promises to provide a fitting conclusion to today’s action on Centre Court.
