Melanie Oudin was handed a walkover in round two of the Bell Challenge this week as fourth seed Aleksandra Wozniak was forced to withdraw due to a right shoulder injury. The American, who will now face Kristina Mladenovic in the last eight, was perhaps fortunate to have avoided a tough meeting with the in-form Canadian.
"I injured my shoulder during my warm-up this evening," said Wozniak. "I will have an MRI in the morning to see exactly what is wrong. I apologize to all my fans who came out to see me play tonight and to the Bell Challenge, which always does a great job and treats me so well here in Québec. I look forward to coming back and playing here again next year."
Mladenovic is a qualifier here and she'll be happy with her progress so far. She toughed out a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Germany's Annika Beck in the second round. Mladenovic broke Beck's serve on six occasions, and her willingness to relentlessly attack her opponent's second serve made a huge difference. The Frenchwoman ended up winning an outstanding 86 percent of the points played when Beck failed to get her first serve in.
We should be in for an intriguing quarter-final here. Oudin appears to be the favourite, but there isn't much to choose between these two young players. Oudin gets the nod because of her ability to compete on fast courts, but it would be no major surprise to see Mladenovic prevail.
