Second seeded Marion Bartoli of France will play Italy’s seventh seeded Roberta Vinci in the quarter-final of Open GDF Suez 2012 WTA tennis tournament.
Despite her number seven ranking in the world, Bartoli hasn’t been able to string together some successive wins in recent times. She won two rounds at the Australian Open before going down in the third round to 35th ranked Jie Zheng.
Even before that, she lost in the third round (quarter-finals) to Victoria Azarenka in the Apia International at Sydney and won two of the three matches she played in the Hopman Cup.
In this Open GDF Suez 2012, Bartoli was one of two to have got a bye into the second round where she overcame early rust to defeat Petra Martic in straight sets. Bartoli won 7-5, 6-1 to make it to the last-eight stage.
Vinci, who entered the tournament as the seventh seeded player, overcame Simona Halep in the first round 6-4, 6-4 before a tough win in the second round against Bethanie Mattek-Sands. Mattek-Sands took the second set of the match 6-1 before Vinci closed out the match 6-3 in the final set.
The only time that Bartoli and Vinci have played before this was way back in 2006 in the second round of the Australian Open. Vinci needed three sets to defeat the French lady. Since then they haven’t played again.
Bartoli should be favourite here but could be stretched to three sets.
The Marion Bartoli v Roberta Vinci quarter-final match at the Open GDF Suez 2012 will be played on Friday, February 10.
