Laura Robson didn’t achieve as much as she would have liked at Wimbledon this year, but she’s bounced right back this week in Palermo, progressing to the first WTA semi-final of her career in the process. The 18-year-old turned heads by defying second seed Roberta Vinci in the round of sixteen, before recording another upset against Carla Suarez Navarro on Friday.
Robson had to dig deep against Suarez Navarro before clinching a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 success. Whilst a sole break of serve handed her the first set, the rest of the contest did not follow this pattern. With the heat being close to unbearable, service games began to falter, and it was the Spaniard who took the initiative.
This set the players up for an unusual final set. It began with five successive service breaks, but Robson managed to regain her composure, and she held serve in the final game for a memorable victory. The Brit will take on Barbora Zahlavova Strycova today for a place in the final.
