Kim Clijsters is a two-time Sony Ericsson Open winner, but seeing as she’s just returned from an ankle injury, she might struggle to replicate her feats from previous years this time around. Even so, it’s great to see the Belgian back in the mix, especially with the young guns in such great form. Victoria Azarenka, Petra Kvitova, Agnieszka Radwanska and Maria Sharapova are all in fine form this year, and it will be intriguing to see if a fully fit Clijsters can shake up the top four.
The former world No. 1 will begin her Sony Ericsson Open campaign on Wednesday with a potentially tricky matchup against Australia’s Jarmila Gajdosova. Gajdosova has been her own worst enemy at times this season, and she’s produced some erratic performances. At her best, Gajdosova can be commanding, as she possesses a superb power game. Still, whether or not she can produce the goods against a player of Clijsters’ obvious ability remains to be seen.
Surprisingly, Clijsters and Gajdosova have never previously met in WTA competition. There are no prizes on offer for guessing who’s the favourite here though. With an 8-2 mark for the season, and an incredible 41 career titles to her name, Clijsters seems likely to secure a berth in the second round.
