Jelena Jankovic has endured a difficult few months this season and she’s dropped way outside of the top twenty. Now ranked No. 34, the Serb will be desperate to put an end to her current slump. She decided to take part in this year’s Texas Tennis Open, though even her status as the second seed here might not have helped her a huge deal.
The reason for this is that she’s been drawn against Yaroslava Shvedova in round one. Shvedova is one of the most popular players on the tour and finds herself climbing towards the upper echelons of the game right now. The Kazakh produced some outstanding results at the French Open and has been in good form all year. She only narrowly missed out on being seeded here herself.
Jankovic holds a 3-1 head to head record against Shvedova, though she’s never been ranked outside of the top ten in any prior meeting between the pairing. Ahead of tonight’s contest it’s tempting to say that Shvedova will manage to close the gap. Looks like we’re set for an exciting clash.
