16-year-old Donna Vekic has become the star player in this year's Tashkent Open, getting through qualifying without dropping a set, before reaching the final with a series of superb victories. The Croatian rising star progressed to her first ever WTA final on Friday with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Eva Birnerova.
"Eva was a difficult player and did not give me any rhythm," said Vekic after the match. "I lost my focus in the second set, but it is important to win on days like these."
"It's quite hard to believe all of this. It feels like a dream," she added. "But it's a reality and I am so happy to make my first final at a WTA tournament."
Vekic deserved to win the match, and was a little unfortunate to be pushed to three sets. Birnerova took her two break point opportunities, whilst Vekic only converted 5 of 19.
The youngster will now take on Irina-Camelia Begu in the final. The Romanian will be eager to win a maiden WTA title also, and is unlikely to make this clash an easy one for the world No. 183.
Begu denied second seed Urszula Radwanska 6-3, 6-3 in the semi-finals and should be in good spirits ahead of this match. Begu's second serve got her out of trouble against the Pole on numerous occasions, a fact that was made particularly obvious by the manner in which she slaughtered Radwanska's. Begu managed to win 12 of the 14 points played when Radwanska's first serve let her down.
We've got an exciting final ahead of us. A win would mean a lot to both players, so we can expect a battle in Tashkent. Vekic should have a very bright future ahead of her, and it will be interesting to see if she can win the first of what could be many WTA titles.
