Irina-Camelia Begu hasn’t been at her best this season but she’ll enter this year’s Texas Tennis Open with ambitions of stringing together a few victories. The Romanian made the semi-finals of WTA Palermo in July but hasn’t done a lot since. She admirably took a set from Victoria Azarenka at the Olympics, but was unable to qualify for the Western and Southern Open when she returned to the United States this year.
Begu will make a start in Dallas with a first round match against Australia’s Casey Dellacqua. The world No. 106 should be fairly content with what she’s done this year. She’s not come close to getting back inside the top fifty, but appears to be gradually ascending the WTA’s ranks. Performances at ITF level have helped her to amass a 20-16 match record in 2012.
This will be the first ever competitive meeting between these two players. Begu ranks higher but Dellacqua is likely to be the more confident of the two players. Unless Begu can rekindle some of the attitude that took her into the top forty she could be in danger of going out in round one tonight.
