The WTA will be back in Katowice in 2014 for the second edition of the BNP Paribas Katowice Open. The tournament celebrated its inaugural year in 2013, with a strong field descending upon Katowice's famous Spodek Hall.

“On behalf of myself and the organizers of BNP Paribas Katowice Open I would like to invite all tennis fans to the greatest tennis event in Poland,” said Tournament Director Paweł Owczarz.

“The prize is 235 000 USD. We are glad to see that many top tennis stars are going to participate in the tournament and that Polish fans will have this amazing opportunity to watch them in world-class game. We hope tennis will stay in Poland for long. I wish all guests many unforgettable moments and good luck to all players.”

Last year, former Wimbledon champ Petra Kvitova headlined the field, but was denied in straight sets 7-6. 6-1 in the final by Roberta Vinci.

"I played a really good game today," said Vinci after the match.

"Petra was playing very well and very aggressively in the first set, getting a lot of first serves in, but I stayed with her and won the tie-break, and things were better in the second set, probably because she was a little bit tired. But everything was working for me all week. I'm happy I was able to beat such a tough opponent and win this title.”

Kvitova was not without her chances in the 69-minute opening set as she was twice a game away from winning the first set at 5-4 and 6-5, but Vinci ultimately held on.

"It was a very tough match against Roberta today. I started pretty slowly at the beginning of the match and I was always the second player on the court because she was dictating everything out there - she plays very well on the clay,” said Kvitova.

“I also felt a little bit without energy. But she was the better player on the court for sure and she really deserved to win the title here in Katowice."
In 2014 we can expect to see another quality-filled main draw in Katowice as the international tier event is well-located for many of Europe's best players. However, we will see the event change to indoor hard courts, after it was initially held on the indoor clay surface.

"It is with pleasure that I accept the Honorary Patronage over the BNP Paribas Katowice Open," said Jerzy Buzek, former Chairman of the European Parliament.

"I believe the tennis we will see in Katowice will be both beautiful and sophisticated. It not only gives us the sense of sports competition and adrenaline, but it also helps popularize tennis in our country,” he continued.

We will finally see the full participation of Agnieszka Radwanska in 2014 after Poland's No. 1 opted out of the main draw in 2013, but did turn up to play an exhibition match in front of the home crowd.

Defending champion Vinci has confirmed she will return and will most likely be one of the top seeds in the draw. Other players to announce they will contest the title include Carla Suarez Navarro, Kirsten Flipkens, Klara Zakopalova, Magdalena Rybarikova, Yvonne Meuburger, Francesca Schiavone and Tsvetana Pironkova.

The BNP Paribas Katowice Open is scheduled to take place between 7 April - 13th April 2014.
