Dominika Cibulkova was handed a tough first round clash against Christina McHale in this year’s Brussels Open, but after winning a first set tie-breaker, the fourth seed cruised through with a 7-6(1), 6-1 success. Cibulkova should be one of the main contenders for the title this week, but she’s been handed another tricky matchup in round two. She’ll take on Belgium’s Yanina Wickmayer.
Wickmayer produced a big comeback from 6-3, 4-3 down against Anna Chakvetadze in round one to clinch a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory. “It was a tough match but I had to power through and I'm glad to have won,” remarked the world No. 36. “It's special to play at home and have the crowd behind you.”
Cibulkova and Wickmayer have a 2-2 head to head record ahead of this clash, so we can perhaps expect a close match. “I know Cibulkova well, we've played each other a lot and we're really good friends too,” said Wickmayer prior to Wednesday’s tie. “She's playing really well at the moment, so it will be a tough match, but I'm really looking forward to it.”
