Anna Tatishvili's fourth round run at the 2012 US Open might not have been a flash in the pan after all. The Georgian is through to the quarter-finals of the Bell Challenge in Quebec City, and could well be a title contender.
She booked her place in the last eight with a confident 6-2, 6-3 dismissal of Croatia's Petra Martic. Tatishvili's serving was fairly wayward, but a brutal returning display enabled her to break Martic on seven occasions. The seventh seed only held serve twice.
"I stayed focused throughout the whole match," said Tatishvili after securing the win. "Consistency made the difference today. I was more patient from the baseline. She was serving very well, so I was trying to get the returns back as much as I could. And in the rallies my goal was to not rush the point. I fought every point."
Tatishvili will now face Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens. After winning a tight clash against top seed Dominika Cibulkova earlier in the week Flipkens defied Mirjana Lucic 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-4 in round two.
Flipkens got just less than half of her first serves in, but she made the most of the ones she got within the lines. She ended up winning 75 percent of the points played on her first serve, firing 12 aces in the process.
It looks like we can look forward to a great quarter-final. Both players have reason to be confident here. Tatishvili seems to be making a real breakthrough and playing some of the best tennis of her career. Flipkens also seems to be on song. After beating the top seed earlier in the week, anything seems possible for the 26-year-old in Quebec City.
