Angelique Kerber enters this year’s Texas Tennis Open as the top seed but she might find it hard to meet expectations here in Dallas. The young German was in action just last night in the final of the Western and Southern Open, which she lost against Na Li in three sets. She could be a title contender again this week but fatigue may turn out to be a concern for Kerber. With the US Open fast approaching it’s almost surprising that she hasn’t pulled out of the event.
Kerber’s first test will be a first round meeting with Mirjana Lucic tonight on the Stadium Court. Lucic hasn’t exactly been resting up either. Whilst she didn’t have to make any last-minute travel arrangements, she did have to qualify for the main draw.
The Croatian veteran is ranked just inside the top hundred, yet she might fancy her chances here. She’s had a bit of time to adjust to the heat in Texas, and she’s had far more time to get used to the hardcourts.
Kerber heads into this tie with a 2-0 head to head record against Lucic, courtesy of straightforward wins in 2009 and 2011. The most recent of these was a 6-1, 6-2 drubbing last season on the hardcourts of Nassau.
