Clay-court specialist Anabel Medina Garrigues faces last year's runner-up Johanna Larsson for a place in the quarters of WTA Bastad.
Larsson always enjoys plenty of support from the Bastad crowd and she'll be hoping to repeat her exploits from last year. She reached the final before losing to Slovenia's Polona Hercog.
She made a decent start on Tuesday and was leading 7-6(6), 4-3 with a break in the second set when Olga Govortsova retired, citing a viral illness.
"It was very difficult out there with the wind and the cold weather, but I'm very happy to get through," Larsson said. "It's nice that everyone's so positive and happy that I'm back here. I have very good memories from last year."
Medina Garrigues came through a tricky first round clash with the in-form British teenager Laura Robson. After making the semis in Palermo last week, Robson came into the match full of confidence and broke serve early but the Spaniard used all her experience to come back and ultimately sneak the win 6-4, 7-6(4).
Prediction: Larsson to pull off the upset in straight sets.
