The seeds have really struggled this week in Colombia, and Alexandra Panova and Timea Babos have defied the odds to reach the semi-finals of the WTA Bogota Open. Both of these players are young and poised to break into the top hundred, so it perhaps won’t be long before we see either of them enter events like this as the main title contenders.
Panova was up against Karin Knapp of Italy in the semi-finals. She managed to get through with a reasonably confident 6-4, 6-4 win. The Russian didn’t have everything her own way, but she displayed great composure to save six out of the seven break points that she faced. This turned out to be crucial on the day.
Babos also progressed with a 6-4, 6-4 victory. She put a stop to Yaroslava Shvedova’s run in straight sets, despite only winning three points more than the Kazakh qualifier. This could prove to be a significant success for the 18 year-old.
There doesn’t seem to be anything to choose between these two competitors heading into Saturday’s clash. This one could easily go either way.
