Roger Federer will be going for a record eighth men's singles title when Wimbledon 2013 gets underway this June while Britain's Andy Murray hopes to win for the first time.
Wimbledon 2013 gets underway on Monday June 24th and finishes on Sunday July 7th.
Federer is currently level with Pete Sampras and William Renshaw on seven Wimbledon titles though it's hard to place Renshaw alongside the two greats of the Open Era as back in his day (he won the last of his Wimbledon crowns back in 1889) they had the challenge round system where Renshaw as defending champion had automatic entry into the next year's final.
If Federer was to secure an eighth title, it's a record which may never be broken and will be up there alongside Rafa Nadal's seven French Open titles (and counting) as one of the all-time great sporting achievements.
Federer's longevity gives added weight to his accomplishments. The Swiss will be 31 by the time Wimbledon 2013 rolls around and other than Andre Agassi and Jimmy Connors, few players have continued to seriously contend for major titles well into their thirties. However going by the energy and quality of Federer's play in 2012 and his sparse injury record, he could easily be challenging for the Wimbledon title in five years time.
Serena Williams will also be seeking a sixth Wimbledon crown though she's still some way behind Martina Navratilova's almost insurmountable record of nine.
