Maria Sharapova once again sits atop the WTA rankings, following her slam title at Roland Garros. The Russian is now aiming to prolong her stint in the No. 1 spot with a lengthy campaign at Wimbledon 2012, and perhaps another major title. The Russian was the runner-up here last year, and there will be plenty of attention directed towards her prior to Monday’s first round clash against Anastasia Rodionova.
Having completed a career Grand Slam at the French Open, Sharapova seems to have a great level of focus about her right now.
“I was much more content with the way I felt [than after winning her other slam titles],” revealed the world No. 1. “Just more pleased. Before you're kind of like, 'Wow, this is amazing'. But I was really happily easy-going. I didn't feel like I needed a huge celebration. I was walking around for three days with the biggest smile. Then I got here and thought, I better get back to reality.”
Sharapova shouldn’t have too much to worry about when she meets the world No. 133 on Monday. She holds a 4-0 head to head record against Rodionova, and has never lost more than three games in any given set against the Aussie. This contest should provide Sharapova with a solid springboard from which to launch an exciting title charge.
