Novak Djokovic was beaten 7-5, 7-5 on Friday in the semi-finals of the Olympic tennis tournament by Britain’s Andy Murray, and after his bronze medal match against Juan Martin Del Potro he’ll be setting his sights on success at the US Open. The Serb won last year’s event, and ranks amongst the favourites to win the event.
Djokovic won last year’s US Open with a 6-2, 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-1 victory over Rafael Nadal. The Serb had been enjoying the best year of his career to date, and looked pretty much unbeatable. While he seemed to be a little burnt out towards the end of the season, Djokovic proved that he had enough left in the tank to win the second hardcourt slam of the season.
When the Serb returns this year he’ll do so as the favourite. Roger Federer is likely to be the world No. 1 when the tournament starts, but many are of the opinion that the Serb remains the best player in the world. It’s also probable that Rafael Nadal will be fully fit. The Spaniard shouldn’t be ruled out in Flushing Meadows, as he’s got every chance of clinching his second slam of the season.
