Bernard Tomic and Carlos Berlocq will meet tonight in an all-unseeded battle over on Court 13 at the 2012 US Open. The two players are in very different places in their respective careers right now, but on paper they’re surprisingly evenly-match in some ways.
Heading into the tournament Tomic is the world No. 43 and Berlocq is the world No. 44. The Aussie holds a 22-21 match record, whilst the Argentine has a 22-23 mark for 2012.
Despite the similarities in results and rankings, the two players have very different styles. Berlocq’s favourite surface is clay, which partially explains why his recent results have been poor. For the majority of his career he appeared to be a journeyman, grinding his way to wins on the Challenger Circuit against other players with aspirations of one day featuring regularly on the ATP World Tour. After years of toil he’s finally enjoying his time near the top.
Tomic, on the other hand, is a hard-hitter who can mix it up with the world’s best on hardcourts. The 19-year-old has shouldered the weight of expectation for years now, having emerged as one of Australia’s hottest talents a good few years ago. The nation has been waiting for someone to fill the boots of Lleyton Hewitt, and Tomic appears to be the man for the job.
Berlocq holds a 1-0 head to head record against Tomic having beaten him in straight sets in this year’s French Open. On the hardcourts at Flushing Meadows, however, Berlocq doesn’t appear to stand much of a chance.
