Serena Williams' late withdrawal has made all the headlines so far but there is still plenty to look forward to with the top eight seeds all ranked inside the top 40.
Hantuchova is the highest ranked player in the draw and as the 2007 champion she will have her eyes on another title. However the lanky Slovak has not been in the best of form recently, losing to Polona Hercog in the Beijing first round last week.
Ivanovic is a much more likely contender. The 2008 Linz champion took Serena's wildcard and is seeded seventh. She's on the way up again after a couple of years in the wilderness and made the quarters in China, giving Caroline Wozniacki a bit of a scare.
US Open quarter-finalist Dominika Cibulkova is the fourth seed but the Slovak has lacked consistency this year and lost early in Tokyo and Beijing over the past fortnight.
Big hitting Czech Petra Kvitova first made a name for herself at this tournament last year, powering her way to the final. Twelve months on she's a Wimbledon semi-finalist though Kvitova has found things tough since then.
