Samantha Stosur entered her round robin clash against with a 0-9 match record against Maria Sharapova, but she produced a superb performance to deny the former world No. 1 a tenth straight victory. The Aussie got off to a flying start, winning the first set with apparent ease. She then showed plenty of nerve to fend off Sharapova’s resistance to secure a 6-1, 7-5 win.
"Obviously it's a big feat for me,” commented Stosur. “You never want to lose to someone 10 times in a row," Stosur said. "I was feeling pretty focused, relaxed and ready to go. I did a few things differently and thankfully it paid off."
Sharapova was full of praise for her opponent. "Sam started off really well and played really well throughout the whole match. She was much more explosive than I was and used her slice really well - it stayed quite low in the court. I believe it was our first meeting indoors - she was just really solid and moved extremely well.”
The world No. 2 went on to say, "It's obviously tough to come back after a month and compete at this level but the good thing is I gave myself a chance and did everything I could to even be here, so in a way I'm happy. I still have a couple of matches to go and time to improve. This is just the beginning of it."You can watch and bet on the action from the WTA Championships at bet365
