Last year’s runner-up Pablo Andujar takes on wildcard Marius Copil for a place in the Bucharest quarters.
This time last year, Andujar was just another unknown Spaniard when he turned up in Romania’s capital to sign in for qualifying but he battled through and went on to reach the final. Now twelve months later he returns as fourth seed and at a career high ranking of 43.
However Andujar’s triumphant return has been blighted by some indifferent summer form which has seen him lose his last six matches. He reached the Stuttgart final in July but since then it has been downhill and last week he crashed out in the opening round of the Genova challenger.
20 year old Copil may not get another such golden chance to reach the quarters of an ATP event. Ranked 232, the young Romanian required a wildcard to compete this week but he grabbed his chance with both hands, defeating fellow wildcard Victor Crivoi 6-3, 6-3.
Prediction: Andujar in three.
