Nicolas Almagro’s bid to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals has been faltering of late, and he needs to do well in this week’s Valencia Open 500 to keep in touch with the top eight. The Spaniard won this event twice in a row in 2006 and 2007, but the fact that this is no longer a clay court event will dent his chances of lifting the title again.
Almagro isn’t helped out by the quality of the draw here. He’s up against Juan Monaco, the world No. 41, in the first round. Monaco is also primarily a clay court expert though, and he could be in for a struggle here on the hard greenset surface. To add to this, he’s involved in Monday night’s doubles action, and he might be a little fatigued ahead of this matchup.
Almagro has a 4-1 head to head record against Monaco, having won the last four meetings between the pairing. His form has been patchy over the past few months though, so Monaco might be able to cause an upset. Still, Almagro should progress if he converts his chances. You can watch and bet on the ATP Valencia Open from Thursday live for free at bet365 > live tennis
