Monica Niculescu continued her march towards the title here in Luxembourg, beating Lucie Hradecka 6-4, 6-4 on Friday in the quarter-finals. Niculescu only won six more points than Hradecka, who was in the main draw as a lucky loser, but this was enough to get the match finished within two sets.
Niculescu will be back in action on Saturday against Anne Keothavong. The pairing will be vying for a place in this week’s final, where they’ll face either Victoria Azarenka or Julia Goerges. Azarenka and Goerges were amongst the favourites at the start of the week, so the winner of this semi-final will be in for a challenge on Sunday.
Keothavong will be the underdog here, and she’s done exceptionally well for a qualifier. She had no trouble in getting past Bibiane Schoofs in the last eight, but Niculescu should provide much more of a threat.
Keothavong won her last matchup against Niculescu (Krakow, 2008), but the Romanian has a 3-1 head to head record against her. This has the makings of a close and exciting contest. You can watch and bet on the action from the WTA Luxembourg Open at bet365
