Mardy Fish will begin his campaign at the Paris Masters this week with hopes of qualifying for the upcoming ATP World Tour Finals. America’s No. 1 is just two wins away from making the cut, but in a field of such quality, he hasn’t exactly got an easy route through to the quarter-finals.
His first contest will be a second round showdown against Florian Mayer of Germany. Mayer has had a successful 2011 season, and his 44-25 match record speaks for itself. His recent form has been good, and he’ll have his own ambitions for the end of the season. A lengthy run here could enable him to finish inside the top twenty.
Mayer won the most recent matchup between the pairing (Wimbledon 2010), but Fish has a 2-1 match record against him having beaten him on hard courts in 2007 and 2008. Every time Fish and Mayer have met, the fans have been treated to a close contest. Maybe we can expect more of the same on Wednesday.
