Na Li got her WTA Championships title charge off to a flying start on Wednesday, as she dismissed Wimbledon runner-up Maria Sharapova in straight sets (7-6(4), 6-4). The contest was extremely close at times, but Li held her nerve in the second set to see out the match.
"I really wasn't thinking about too much during the match," revealed Li immediately after the match. "I knew I had a chance to come back. The match is never finished until it's finished. I'm so happy I was able to beat Maria because she's a top player, and also today was my first match at the Championships, so I want to thank all the crowd here in Istanbul for supporting me."
Sharapova has now lost both of her matches here in Istanbul, and this defeat has seriously hampered her chances of emerging from the group stage. She needs to hope that other results work out favourably for her now or the knock-out stages will be out of reach for good. You can watch and bet on the action from the WTA Championships at bet365
