Petra Kvitova completed a superb week on Sunday by beating Victoria Azarenka in the final of the WTA Championships. Kvitova had been in terrific form here in Istanbul, and she was the deserved champion after lasting the week without losing a match.

The momentum swung both ways throughout the contest, with both players showing flashes of inspiration. Kvitova was the quickest out of the blocks, and she seemed destined to stroll through the first set at 5-0 up. Azarenka pulled it back to 5-5, but the Czech still won the set.

The second set was Azarenka’s, and she seemed to have taken control of the clash. With the match poised at one set all, Kvitova and Azarenka continued to maintain the excitement. Kvitova managed to break Azarenka in the third, and this was enough to seal a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 victory.

"It was unbelievable tennis," remarked Kvitova after the matchup. "We were both really fighting. Every game and every set was very close. Maybe I played better on the important points in the match. We both played some of our best here in Istanbul today - it was a final, so why not?"

Azarenka was gracious in defeat, admitting, "It's hard to lose, but I'm glad I lost to such a champion who deserved to win. Petra was amazing today. She really did a great job.”

“I gave it my all today, the crowd kept me fighting all the way through,” she continued. “They were amazing today and all week. I have no words to describe it."

Having started the season outside of the top thirty, Kvitova ends the year as the world No. 2. The future looks bright for the youngster, and she’ll now be aiming to take over from Caroline Wozniacki at the top of the rankings.

After winning the Wimbledon title this year, Kvitova has already shown that she’s got what it takes to cut it at the highest level. Sunday’s win is further evidence of this.
