Petra Kvitova demonstrated why she should be considered a major threat at this week’s WTA Championships on Tuesday, as she raced into a 6-2, 4-1 lead against Vera Zvonareva. The powerful Czech then began to come unstuck, but she pulled herself together in time to claim a 6-2, 6-4 success.
Speaking on-court after the clash, Kvitova admitted that she was very nervous. "I was in the locker room before the match with my coaches and couldn't even move, and my stomach was turning. It's a new experience for me here. But it's important for me that I won my first match and I hope to keep playing well."
Zvonareva has plenty of experience here, though she didn’t feel that she’d played too badly. "Petra didn't really give me any chances in the first set, and even though I turned the second set around a little bit, I couldn't convert on a few chances I had," stated the Russian.
"Overall I played a decent match. It wasn't my best tennis, but she just played much better than I did. She was going for her shots and making a lot of them. She just outplayed me."
Given Kvitova’s superb performances this season on indoor courts, it will be intriguing to see how far she can go this week. She’s boosted her chances of reaching the semi-finals, and if she can get within two wins of the title, she’s got a real chance here in Istanbul. You can watch and bet on the action from the WTA Championships at bet365
