Roger Federer recently dropped outside of the top three for the first time in over eight years, but he’s unwilling to let this get him down. Instead, the Swiss ace revealed that his sights are set on finishing the season as strongly as possible.
In a recent interview he admitted that he had no idea what he had to do to reclaim the No. 3 ranking spot, saying that he’s focused primarily on trying to win matches.
“The focus right now is trying to play well here in Basel,” stated Federer. He’ll be defending a lot of ranking points in the next few weeks, but this doesn’t appear to be bothering him. He added “the next round is my priority, but clearly after winning here, semis in Paris with match points and winning London, I know I can do extremely well.”
“If I’m three or four [in the world] at the end of the year, we’ll see, but if I’m going to make a move I need to win tournaments and that’s what it’s going to take,” continued Federer. Naturally, he’ll be seeking out a title success in Basel this week.
He made a good start, defeating Potito Starace in straight sets, but admitted that he’d been feeling slightly nervous throughout the matchup. Still, Federer is no stranger to important matches, and nerves probably won’t get the better of him. It seems very likely that we’ll see him at least come close to winning his second title of the year here in Basel. You can watch and bet on the ATP Basel Open live for free at bet365 > live tennis
