Controversy about the U.S Open’s lack of covers and rain protection is likely to rage on for some time after the events of this week, but the organisers can at least take solace in the fact that the semi-final line-up here promises to provide an exhilarating finale to the competition.

The first matchup on the Arthur Ashe court will involve the almost unstoppable Novak Djokovic, and Roger Federer, a man believed by many to be the greatest tennis player of all time. Federer will be out to avenge a five-set defeat from last season’s action at Flushing Meadows, whilst Djokovic will be aiming to make sure he gets past the only player that has beaten him in a full-length match in 2011.

Following this will be a showdown between Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray. Murray has been tipped by many to finally win his first slam, but he’ll need to snap a four-match losing streak in order to earn a berth in the final. Whilst Djokovic has stolen some of Nadal’s thunder this season, the Spaniard still clearly has a good chance of winning this competition.

The Women’s semi-finals also have the potential to be thrilling. Serena Williams’s clash with Caroline Wozniacki will be the third matchup on Arthur Ashe. Wozniacki is another player who has never quite managed to clinch a slam title, though she’s playing well enough to change this. That said, Serena has made an incredible return to competitive tennis, and she may well go on to dominate the women’s game once again.

The other semi-final, between Samantha Stosur and Angelique Kerber, will not be taking place on the centre stage. Surprisingly, the decision has been made to play all of the semi-finals today, leaving Stosur and Kerber to battle it out away from the spotlight. This has proved to be a controversial decision, and there has been noticeable criticism directed towards the tournament organisers.

Even so, anyone who gets the opportunity to watch Stosur face Kerber should be in for a treat. Stosur seems likely to win, but Kerber will surely be eager to produce the best performance of her career. Nobody was expecting Kerber to go far here, and her dream run will have won her some new fans.
