After missing almost seven months of the season this year, Benjamin Becker has slipped to a world ranking of No. 315. He entered this week’s Salzburg Challenger as a qualifier, though he could be as much of a threat as any of the seeded players.
Becker made a slow start to his first round contest against Marius Copil of Romania, but recovered from a set down to win 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. The German only won four more points than his opponent, and could have been on his way out of the competition if he hadn’t managed to convert five of seven crucial break points played on Copil’s serve.
Becker’s next opponent will be Martin Fischer of Austria. Fischer has only ever won two matches at the top level, and the fact that he’s ranked almost eighty places above Becker counts for nothing.
That said, Fischer is playing on home soil, which seems to suit him perfectly. He brushed aside the challenge of sixth seed Go Soeda in round one (6-3, 6-1), and this will give Becker something to think about. Even so, Fischer is in for an uphill struggle against the dangerous qualifier.
