Marion Bartoli took a 1-7 match record into her contest against Victoria Azarenka on Friday at the WTA Championships, and that sole victory had come by virtue of retirement. The world No. 9 played as if she had a point to prove though, and she managed to tough out a superb three-set victory in just over two and a half hours.
Bartoli had been 5-3 up in the first set, but she dropped two set points, and Azarenka took control of the next few games. As the first set went Azarenka’s way, many expected Bartoli to crumble. This didn’t happen though, and Bartoli battled her way to a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 success.
"I lost many, many times against Vika," said Bartoli immediately after her win. "I had this huge lead in the first set and she came back very strongly to win the first set and leading 2-0 in the second. I tried to focus on my own game and play well from my side."
She continued by saying, "It was very nice to have this experience. It was a really great atmosphere, a great crowd. I'm very pleased with my victory over Vika today."
Azarenka will be looking to bounce back from this defeat on Saturday when she meets Vera Zvonareva in the semi-finals. If she plays like she did in her opening two matches, the Belarusian will have a reasonable chance of winning the title. You can watch and bet on the action from the WTA Championships at bet365
