The loser will almost certainly be eliminated so there’s a lot at stake for both players. With each round-robin win also counting for extra ranking points and prize money there’s every incentive to fight until the end.

If things had gone a little differently Del Potro and Verdasco would be currently topping Group A at one win apiece.

Del Potro looked the stronger player against Andy Murray after two sets, starting to impose his extra power on the Murray defences with growing success but he fell apart at the beginning of the third set and Murray seized control. Verdasco was within a few points of a shock upset over Roger Federer but suffered a bit of a meltdown at 6-4, 5-5 and lost eight of the next nine games.

Both men are enjoying their best ever seasons on the ATP tour. Del Potro boasts a stunning 51-15 win-loss record and his first grand slam title while Verdasco has lit up the stadiums of Melbourne Park and Flushing Meadows and has an equally impressive 52-23 match record.

Few players strike a tennis ball harder than these two so this match is all going to be about first strike tennis. Del Potro should probably edge it though as on current form he can probably hit through Verdasco consistently for longer.

Boylesports have Del Potro at 8/13 while Verdasco is 7/5 with sporting bet
