Azarenka and Kirilenko are both hoping to salvage a medal from this year's Olympics after suffering one-sided semi-final defeats on Friday afternoon. Kirilenko has also been competing in the women's doubles this week and all the matches appeared to catch up with her during her semi-final against Sharapova. Normally such a feisty competitor, Kirilenko folded fairly meekly, going down 6-2, 6-3.
"It's always tough to lose but I can just take positives from this tournament," Kirilenko said. "I'm still in with a chance to compete for a medal. And she played great today - it was difficult to do anything, but I tried my best."
One couldn't help but feel for Azarenka who had to wait four and a half hours to get on court after Roger Federer's epic tussle with Juan Martin Del Potro. Having suffered several comprehensive beatings at the hands of Serena in recent years, she can't have been too confident and she was wiped off the court, with the American smashing 34 winners.
If she can put that defeat behind her, she will be slight favourite for this match. Azarenka and Kirilenko are tied at 2-2 on the head-to-head but Azarenka has won the past two in straight sets. However they have not played since 2010.
Prediction: Azarenka in three.
