Petra Martic is backing French Open champion Maria Sharapova to win Olympic gold at London 2012.
Martic is one of the most talented young players on the tour and the 21 year old is enjoying the best season of her career, breaking the world's top 50 after reaching the fourth round of the French Open last month.
She's tipping the Roland Garros champion to claim Olympic gold. "Although the competition in women's tennis is very tough and almost anyone can win, I give advantage to Sharapova, she is my favorite, although Serena showed how dangerous she can be by winning Wimbledon," Martic said. "As for men, I believe in Roger Federer. He has no Olympic gold medal yet and is very motivated. He is the logical choice. If we talk about our (Croatian) tennis players, then perhaps Marin Cilic has the best shot. Karlovic is recovering from injury, and Ivan Dodig has a good game on grass, however it is difficult to predict his form."
Martic is relishing the opportunity to compete in her first Olympics, viewing it as a great opportunity to get some more media exposure.
"I know that people don't really have an opportunity to see me on TV so I'll try to play my best ! It is known that I am very hot-tempered tennis player and that in the past I used to smash racquets, however as the time goes by and as I am maturing it is happening less and less. But I see my temper as advantage over other female players."
"I will try to approach the Olympic tournament as any other, I heard lots of stories, but I really do not know how it will be. Frankly, I see these Olympic Games as an opportunity to learn and gain experience, but of course that does not mean I intend to wave white flag there, otherwise I wouldn't even go. Usually I often surprise when nobody expects anything from me so who knows, maybe it will be like that this time too."
