Novak Djokovic is overwhelmed at the thought of carrying the Serbian flag at the London 2012 opening ceremony and feels that winning gold would be the pinnacle of his career.
Djokovic is 7/4 favourite with BetVictor to win Olympic gold at London 2012
The Olympics hasn't always been the biggest of events for tennis players but in the past eight years, it's gained far more significance and the public declarations from Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer of what Olympic gold would/does mean to them has played a large part in that.
Djokovic is hugely patriotic and winning the Davis Cup for his country 2 years ago will always remain one of the high points of his career and at the Beijing Olympics the young Serb was visibly emotional after beating James Blake to win the bronze medal.
"Most of the tournaments that we play, we play as individual tennis players. There are very few competitions such as the Olympic Games where we can feel the team spirit, as in the Davis Cup, but this is even more," Djokovic told the press ahead of a practise session at Wimbledon.
"It makes you really proud of wearing your national colours, having athletes from your country coming to support you, going to the Olympic Village, and of course the opening ceremony and everything. It is very emotional because it is not just you who matters there, it's the whole nation. So there is a huge excitement going on with all the tennis players prior to the Olympic Games. The Olympic Games are the pinnacle of all sports, in my opinion."
“Just the thought of carrying the flag there (at Friday's opening ceremony), it's mind-blowing really. It feels incredible, I remember being at the opening ceremony in Beijing and how incredible it was to be part of that opening ceremony, in front of 90,000 to 100,000 people, and God knows how many millions watching around the world.”
