Serena Williams helped the USA on their way to a 2-0 lead against the Ukraine on Saturday in the Fed Cup World Group play-offs. The former world No. 1, currently ranked ninth, made light work of the challenge of 17-year-old Elina Svitolina, beating her 6-2, 6-1.

“My thing is to get out of there as soon as I can and it’s not hard in Fed Cup because you have a coach on the sideline to help motivate you and stay focused,” said Williams after the clash. Praising her opponent, Williams added, “She has a good game and she’s extra young so she has plenty of time to develop it from what it already is.”

Williams will now face Lesia Tsurenko, who took Christina McHale to three sets on Saturday. Tsurenko, the world No. 110, will need a miracle to get past Williams here. Although Ukraine’s young team have shown plenty of guts and determination, this tie is as good as finished. Serena should be able to get the job done in straight sets in Kharkiv on Sunday.
