Petra Kvitova clinched a big win for the Czech Republic on Saturday, beating Italy’s Sara Errani 6-4, 6-3 to establish a 2-0 lead for her nation. The Czech team are now just one win away from earning a berth in the final of the Fed Cup.
“I had to play a really tough match especially after Sara played so well last week,” said Kvitova after her match. Thanking the fans, she added: “They really helped me a lot. Without them it would be boring. I’m really happy to be playing close to home after two years.”
Kvitova will now take on Francesca Schiavone in what could be the decider. Schiavone simply hasn’t been in good form this year and she’s dropped out of the top ten. The Italian was beaten by Lucie Safarova in straight sets on Saturday, and a win against the world No. 3 seems unlikely.
Schiavone holds a 1-0 head to head record against Kvitova, having beaten her in Madrid in 2009. Still, the improvements made by the 22 year-old since then have been vast. We can expect her to draw level with Schiavone on Sunday and complete a superb victory for the Czech Republic in the process.
