Lucie Safarova got the Czech Republic off to a dream start on Saturday, beating former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone in the first singles rubber of the Czech Republic versus Italy Fed Cup World Group semi-final. The world No. 23 scraped a first set tie-breaker, before cruising to a 7-6(3), 6-1 win.
“I feel amazing with so many people here cheering for you which gives you huge power,” said Safarova. Schiavone, meanwhile, was left to reflect on what could have been. “I had my chance, but I didn’t catch it…I couldn’t play the best,” admitted the Italian.
Safarova will now take on an in-form Sara Errani. Errani was beaten in straight sets by world No. 3 Petra Kvitova on Saturday, but there’s no shame in this. Having recently won the Barcelona Ladies Open, Errani is likely to still be in a confident mood.
Safarova holds a 1-0 head to head record against Errani prior to this contest, but this is unlikely to count for much. Errani has already won 2 WTA titles this year, and she’s more than capable of bouncing back from Saturday’s loss.
This could turn out to be a key contest, provided that Schiavone can upset Kvitova in the third singes rubber. If she can’t, the Czech Republic will be through to the final.
