After day one in Castellon it very much looks like hope is gone for an unlikely Austria victory. The Austrians got off to a disastrous start on Friday as their main man Jurgen Melzer fell to a crushing 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 defeat against Nicolas Almagro. This was followed by a predictable success for Spain’s David Ferrer over world No. 139 Andreas Haider-Maurer (6-1, 6-3, 6-1).
On Saturday the Spanish doubles pairing of Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez will have the opportunity to secure the victory for the home side. They’ll take on Oliver Marach and Alexander Peya in the third matchup of the tie.
The Spanish pairing appear to be the favourites here, and with Melzer’s defeat on Friday, the Austrian team’s defeat seems inevitable. Unless something very unexpected happens in Castellon over the next few days, Spain should find themselves competing in the final four.
